walking and hiking
The Giffre Valley is perfect walking and hiking country and there are walks suitable for all age groups and abilities. You can walk for a few minutes or hike for several hours, the choice is yours!
Stroll around the beautiful La Jaÿsinia alpine botanical gardens in Samoëns or amble around the perimeters of an azure blue lake. Walk the footpaths along the banks of the Giffre river, through forests, over bridges and stopping at villages on the way. Alternatively visit the Cirque du Fer à Cheval national park at the end of the valley where grand cliffs form a horseshoe in front of the Dents Blanches mountain range, it is breathtakingly beautiful.
If hiking is more your thing, perched high above the lush green valley are mountain refuges that can be reached easily within a few hours or a day’s hike – with or without a donkey to help you! Mountain refuges are in beautiful locations with sensational views and abundant wildlife, and offer basic accommodation and food to hikers, climbers and mountaineers in return for a small payment. There are 900 kms of footpaths and hiking trails and 11 mountain huts to visit so you’ll be spoilt for choice.
